Winter Sunrise Yoga Program – Endurance
“The ability to endure an unpleasant or difficult process or situation without giving way”
In yoga, endurance is likened to the Sanskrit term Tapas. At its utmost Tapas involves correct thinking, full control over one’s turbid emotions, a clear understanding of moral values and consequent purification of one’s character. (Yoga Sutra 2.1)
It is the ability to overcome the mental resistance towards that which may be perceived as uncomfortable ie the attempt to resist actions that may bring momentary pleasures and putting up with the resulting discomfort. (Yoga Sutra 2.1)
On a base level for those of us who are laymen or house holders where we start from may vary when looking at building our endurance or self discipline.
A sure way to test this is to arise early in the morning in winter!
As a follow on from our Autumn Sunrise program the winter program once again allows you to develop the self discipline and consistency with a regular yoga practice, optimal waking times and support to your self practice.
I have been teaching/practising yoga for 20 plus years. One of the most important aspects of a sustained yoga practice over a long period and developing and maintaining healthy habits is the ability to have Tapas and endurance. This is something that is continually developed and strengthened over time so eventually it no longer feels like an effort but becomes a part of you.
My approach to the sessions draws on the learnings of my years of study with my teachers combined with my gained experiences in the clinic and personal self practice. I have a background in the traditional approach and therapeutic applications of yoga.
The winter program will include daily practices to build endurance in body, mind and breath.
Endurance encapsulates the ability to have mental strength, inner willpower, improved breath quality for more sustained energy and vitality and strength of the body to support both physical and physiological health.
These practices benefit everyone and are not just for those who may not fit into an athletic yoga practice. And are particularly beneficial for those who feel they could use some encouragement to learn the art of Tapas or self will.
Each session in this 6 day program is of 1hr 15 minutes duration. The hour is spent on the asana practice in preparation for the concluding 15 minutes of pranayama/meditation. Attending these led sessions will allow you to pay closer attention to the practice including the finer details you may miss when practising at home or in a general studio class.
Sessions will be conducted online via Zoom.
There is an option to attend the 1hr if you have time restraints with the added 15 mins an optional extra for those who can attend for the full allocated time.
These practices work well as a complement to other exercise regimes.
I am looking forward to sharing these 6 early mornings with you and taking time to turn off all the external noise around us and embrace the beauty of the more inward yoga practices that support inner health and wellbeing.
Kim Allan conducts private one to one therapeutic yoga sessions at the clinic and periodically teaches classes/programs where there is a high level of care for students, and you will learn how to practice Yoga in a nurturing environment and gain a thorough understanding of the practice of yoga including Asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing practices) and meditation.
